📖 Plot Summary
Raju starts his career as a railway guide in Malgudi. Known for his smooth talk and ability to impress tourists, he soon meets Rosie, the wife of Marco, a cold, scholarly archaeologist. Rosie is a passionate dancer, but her husband disapproves of her art. Encouraged by Raju, she leaves her husband and pursues a career in classical dance.
Raju becomes her manager and lover, helping Rosie rise to fame as a celebrated performer. However, success breeds arrogance. Raju forges Rosie’s signature on a legal document, gets caught, and is imprisoned for forgery and fraud.
After serving his sentence, Raju retreats to a small village where the locals mistake him for a holy man. Initially reluctant, he embraces the role of a sadhu. When a drought strikes, villagers beg him to fast for rain. Trapped by his own reputation and guilt, Raju commits to the fast—genuinely transforming in the process.
The novel ends ambiguously, with Raju collapsing from exhaustion as villagers believe his sacrifice may have brought rain. Whether it rains or not is left to the reader’s imagination.
